In Illinois, both medical and recreational marijuana are legal. Medical marijuana was legalized in 2013 through House Bill 1, allowing qualified patients to possess up to 2.5 ounces of usable cannabis during a 14-day period. Following this, recreational marijuana was legalized in 2019. Residents over the age of 21 can purchase and possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana at any time, while non-residents may possess up to 15 grams. However, consuming marijuana in public places remains illegal.
