Ever wondered who’s behind your favorite cannabis strains?

Maybe not. It’s easy to forget that modern weed is almost unrecognizable when compared to what stoners of the 1960s, 70s, and even through to the late 1980s indulged in – or what nature originally intended the plant to be.

Not only has the sticky-icky gone through a huge evolution in the past few decades, but this evolution wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of a bunch of legendary breeders.

Today, we pay homage to some of the most influential breeders in the cannabis world, who have helped shape and define the strains we know and love today.

But, before we do, what is a weed breeder, and what exactly do they do?

What Is a Cannabis Breeder?

Pretty much what it says on the box, but there’s a lot more to it than just putting male plants with females – as we’ll see.

A cannabis breeder is someone who specializes in creating new strains by selectively breeding different cultivars together. This process involves carefully choosing and crossing specific traits from different strains (or even phenotypes within a strain) to slowly but surely weed out the desired genetic characteristics.

It’s a delicate, time-consuming process that requires not only skill and knowledge, but also a passion for the plant. These breeders are constantly experimenting and pushing boundaries to create new and unique strains.

There are different methods used by breeders to get certain results, but two that need highlighting are F1 hybrids and poly hybrids.

F1 cannabis hybrids

F1 hybrids have long been seen as the ‘gold standard’ in the breeding game, and they are still in many circles. F1 hybrids are the first generation of offspring from crossing two genetically distinct strains with certain traits that breeders are looking to combine into one brand-new super strain.

Most of the major strains of the past few decades are F1 hybrids.

Polyhybrid cannabis strains

The Brothers Grimm (Mr. Soul & Sly)

Meet The Brothers Grimm, founded by Mr. Soul (aka Breeder Steve) and his partner Sly in the late ’90s.

Some of the first breeders to bring strains to the commercial market that were both cannabinoid heavy and with less than a 9-week flowering period.

Their star strain, Cinderella 99 or “C99,” is a prime example. His Blueberry strain is about as famous as it gets, winning the Cannabis Cup in ’88 and again in 2000. Every single ‘blueberry’ based strain of today can trace its roots back to DJ Short’s original cut.
