The weed you’re using must be dry. When fresh pot is used, the end result has a tendency to be substandard.

If possible, use an empty 1.5-liter wine bottle with a screw-top lid.

Pour the alcohol and ground weed into the empty wine bottle or mason jar. Keep the empty alcohol bottle for later. Screw the lid tightly onto the bottle and let it sit for two weeks at room temperature in a dark cabinet. Twice a week you need to shake the bottle up so as to agitate the pot.

Using a coffee filter, cheese cloth or a fine sieve, strain the pot from the alcohol. Put the alcohol back into its original bottle and screw the lid tightly onto the bottle.

It’s best to keep the Alcohol Extraction in a cool dark place to protect it from degradation by light. 1 shot is enough to get you stoned.

As this extract is alcoholic, you need to be careful with your consumption; because it’s alcohol with cannabis in it, you need to be even more careful.

Tip: For every alcoholic beverage you drink make sure you drink a pint of water—and this goes for alcohol without weed in it, too!

    Introduction to Cannabis Infusion

Infusing cannabis gives you the chance to make a range of unique and quite potent cannabis creations. By combining cannabis with various substances like oils, alcohols, and other liquids, you can craft everything from THC tinctures to cannabis-infused beverages. The key to unlocking these creations lies in using decarboxylated cannabis, or “decarbed cannabis,” which activates the cannabinoids, making them more effective. The cannabis industry is constantly innovating, offering new and exciting products that cater to a wide range of preferences and needs. Whether you’re looking to make a refreshing drink or a powerful tincture, the art of cannabis infusion allows you to explore and enjoy the full potential of this versatile plant. With countless recipes available, you can experiment and find the perfect cannabis-infused beverage or tincture to suit your taste.

    Understanding Cannabis

Cannabis is a complex plant that boasts over 100 different cannabinoids, with THC and CBD being the most well-known. These cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, producing effects that range from pain relief to euphoria. To create effective cannabis-infused products, it’s essential to understand the different types of cannabis, including indica, sativa, and hybrid strains. Each strain offers unique effects and benefits, allowing you to tailor your infusions to your specific needs. Additionally, other cannabinoids like CBG and CBN can add unique properties to your creations, making your cannabis-infused products even more potent and diverse to consume.

    Start with the Right Herb

First things first: your cannabis must be completely dry. This isn’t just a preference—it’s essential. Fresh cannabis, while aromatic and sticky, contains a lot of moisture that can interfere with the infusion process. That extra water can lead to a weaker extraction, introduce mold if not stored properly, and even result in a cloudy, funky-tasting spirit. Dry cannabis ensures a clean, efficient extraction of THC, CBD, and those delightful terpenes that give your infusion its unique aroma and flavor profile.

Ensure that the cannabis is fully covered by the alcohol to allow for effective extraction of cannabinoids.

If you’ve just harvested or purchased fresh flower, give it time to cure properly. Store it in a glass jar with a humidity pack, and wait until the buds snap cleanly before using them. Measure out one ounce of cannabis and then grind it into a fine, powder-like consistency. The finer the grind, the more surface area there is for the alcohol to interact with—resulting in a more powerful extract.

    Preparing Decarboxylated Cannabis

Decarboxylation is a crucial step in preparing cannabis for infusion, as it activates the cannabinoids, making them more potent and effective. To decarboxylate your cannabis, start by preheating your oven to a low heat, around 220-240°F. Spread your cannabis buds evenly on a baking sheet and place them in the oven. Allow them to heat for 30-60 minutes, ensuring that the cannabinoids are fully activated. This process transforms the non-psychoactive compounds into their active forms, ready to be infused into your favorite products. With decarboxylated cannabis, you can create powerful and effective cannabis-infused beverages, edibles, and more.

    Alcohol Extraction Methods

Alcohol extraction is a cornerstone of crafting high-quality cannabis products, from tinctures to beverages. This method allows for efficient extraction of cannabinoids from decarboxylated cannabis, ensuring you get the most out of your plant material. Here are three popular alcohol extraction methods to consider:

Cold Alcohol Extraction: This method involves steeping decarboxylated cannabis in alcohol at a low temperature. The process is slow but effective, allowing the cannabinoids to gently extract into the alcohol over time. Cold alcohol extraction is perfect for those who prefer a hands-off approach and are patient enough to wait for the magic to happen.

Heat-Assisted Alcohol Extraction: If you’re looking for a quicker method, heat-assisted alcohol extraction might be your go-to. By heating the cannabis and alcohol mixture, you can speed up the extraction process. This method requires careful temperature control to avoid degrading the cannabinoids. Heat-assisted extraction is ideal for those who want to create potent cannabis products in a shorter time frame.

Solvent-Based Alcohol Extraction: For a more advanced approach, solvent-based alcohol extraction uses high-proof alcohol to extract cannabinoids from the plant material. This method is highly efficient and often used in the cannabis industry to produce high-quality extracts. While it requires more equipment and expertise, the results are well worth the effort.

Each of these alcohol extraction methods has its own set of advantages, so choose the one that best fits your needs and resources. Whether you’re making a THC tincture or a cannabis-infused beverage, understanding these alcohol extraction methods will help you create potent and effective cannabis products.

The Bottle Trick: Go Big with a Wine Bottle

Here’s a pro tip that might surprise you: skip the mason jars and go for an empty 1.5-liter wine bottle with a screw-top lid. Why? It’s tall, narrow, and designed to hold alcohol for long periods, making it the perfect vessel for your infusion. The screw-top also makes shaking and storage easy without risk of leaks.

Once you’ve prepped your cannabis, pour it into the empty wine bottle along with your alcohol of choice. Be sure to hang on to that original liquor bottle—you’ll need it later to store your finished extract.

    Choosing the Right Alcohol Base

This is where the fun (and flavor) really begins. The stronger the alcohol, the more efficient your extraction will be. Whether you’re using traditional booze or experimenting with cannabis-infused alternatives, aim for something that’s at least 80 proof (40% ABV). If you can get your hands on something 100 proof or higher, even better. Mix the alcohol thoroughly with the cannabis to ensure an even extraction of cannabinoids. Here are some infusion-friendly spirits to consider:

    • Vector Vodka: A neutral base that allows the cannabis flavor to shine.

    • Ganga Gin: Botanical notes from the gin blend beautifully with earthy cannabis tones.

    • Cannabis Campari: A bold, bitter aperitif with a twist—perfect for pre-dinner drinks.

    • Wasted White Rum: Smooth, slightly sweet, and perfect for tropical or spicy concoctions.

Each spirit brings its own unique flavor profile, so feel free to experiment and see what works best for your palate.

    Infusion Techniques

Mastering infusion techniques is essential to ensure that your cannabis is properly infused into the liquid. These techniques help maximize the extraction of cannabinoids, resulting in more potent and flavorful cannabis-infused products. Here are a couple of techniques to get you started:

    Freezing and Combining

Freezing and combining is a straightforward yet effective technique for infusing cannabis into a liquid. Start by freezing your decarboxylated cannabis. Once frozen, combine it with your liquid of choice, such as alcohol or vegetable glycerin. The cold temperature helps preserve the cannabinoids while they slowly extract into the liquid. This method is particularly useful for creating cannabis tinctures and other cannabis-infused beverages. Simply let the mixture sit for a period of time, allowing the cannabinoids to fully infuse into the liquid.

    Shake and Strain

The shake and strain technique is a bit more hands-on but equally effective. Begin by combining your cannabis and liquid in a container. Shake the mixture vigorously to ensure the cannabinoids are thoroughly extracted. This agitation helps break down the plant material, allowing the cannabinoids to infuse into the liquid more efficiently. After shaking, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining plant material. This technique is perfect for creating cannabis-infused beverages like cocktails and sodas, offering a quick and efficient way to enjoy your cannabis creations.

By mastering these infusion techniques, you can ensure that your cannabis-infused products are potent, flavorful, and ready to enjoy. Whether you’re making a tincture or a cocktail, these methods will help you get the most out of your cannabis.

Infuse It Right: The Two-Week Wait

Now that your cannabis and alcohol are in the bottle, it’s time to let the magic happen. Seal the wine bottle tightly and place it in a cool, dark cabinet. Light and heat are the enemies of potency here—both can degrade cannabinoids over time. Keep it tucked away and out of sight.

In addition to shaking, you can also gently stir the mixture to ensure even distribution of the cannabis.

For the next two weeks, you’ll play bartender-meets-alchemist. Twice a week, give the bottle a good shake. Make sure to shake vigorously to ensure all the herb is properly saturated. This agitation helps break down the plant material and encourages maximum extraction. Each shake redistributes the alcohol and ensures all the herb is properly saturated. It’s a meditative ritual, and a small price to pay for the blissful end result.

    Strain and Store

After two weeks, it’s time to separate your now-potent alcohol from the plant material. Use a fine mesh sieve, coffee filter, or cheese cloth to strain the mixture into a clean glass bowl or large measuring cup. This process might take some patience, especially if your cannabis was finely ground, but don’t rush it—slow straining preserves clarity.

Once strained, pour the infused alcohol back into its original bottle (or any dark glass bottle with a tight seal). Carefully handle the pouring to avoid spillage and ensure all the liquid is transferred. This not only reduces waste but also makes for easy storage. Label the bottle with the date and strain used—trust us, it’s easy to forget a few cocktails in.

Store the finished product in a cool, dark place to maintain potency. Properly stored, your cannabis spirit can last for months.

Dosage & Consumption: Know Your Limits

This is where you need to tread carefully. One shot of cannabis-infused alcohol can be highly potent. Unlike edibles that take up to two hours to kick in, cannabis-infused alcohol has much faster onset—often 15 to 30 minutes—thanks to alcohol increasing the bioavailability of THC.

Start with a small amount, such as a half-shot, especially if it’s your first time. Remember to start low and go slow to find your optimal dose. Sip slowly and wait at least 45 minutes before deciding to up the dose. The effects can be deceptively strong, especially when mixed with additional alcohol.

And don’t forget the golden rule: hydrate. Every cannabis cocktail should be followed by at least one pint of water. This isn’t just about hangover prevention—it’s about protecting your body from the dehydrating effects of alcohol while also tempering the more intense effects of THC.

    Flavor Hacks & Creative Variations

Want to take it a step further? Infuse your spirit with additional flavor elements like:

    • Citrus peels (orange, lemon, lime) for bright, zesty notes.

    • Fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, or mint to enhance botanical spirits.

    • Spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or cloves for warm complexity.

You can also use your infusion as a base for craft cocktails. The Ganja Martini is a classic: 2 oz of Ganga Gin, a splash of dry vermouth, ice, and a lemon twist or olive. It’s sleek, potent, and totally summer-ready.

Want something tropical? Try Wasted White Rum with muddled mint, lime juice, and a splash of soda for a cannabis Mojito. The possibilities are endless. You can also experiment with ginger beer to create a cannabis-infused Moscow Mule, adding a spicy kick to your cocktail. You can also garnish your cocktails with slices of lemon, lime, or other fresh herbs to enhance their visual appeal and flavor.

    Troubleshooting Common Issues

Creating cannabis-infused products can sometimes present challenges, but with a few tips, you can easily overcome them. One common issue is the separation of cannabis oil from other ingredients. To solve this, use an emulsifier like vegetable glycerin to help combine the oil with the other ingredients seamlessly. Another frequent concern is the potency of the final product. Adjusting the amount of decarboxylated cannabis you use can help you achieve the desired strength. By following step-by-step instructions and using the right ingredients, you can troubleshoot these issues and create high-quality cannabis-infused products with ease. When you cook with cannabis, precise temperature control is crucial to avoid degrading the cannabinoids.
